In 2013, we received a letter from St. Jude and our then 4-year daughter wanted to know why there was a child with no hair. When we explained to Alexandria what St. Jude does and why the child had no hair, Alexandria began to cry. She ran into her room, came out with her piggy bank, and wanted to give all her money to them. While extending her piggy bank to us, she just kept saying, “Help them.” Since that time, Alexandria has told us many times, “I will help those children.” She approached us in the summer of 2017 to ask if she could hike the Continental Divide Trail to raise money and awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Due to logistics and some other reasons, we have asked her to hike the Appalachian Trail. Starting in March of 2019, Alexandria will begin her journey to raise money and awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by completing a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. Her fundraising goal is very ambitious and one that she set for herself at $3,100,000.00. Her father, Eddie, with her mother Amy playing a vital role in support, will accompany Alexandria. We have an accomplished thru hiker, Grace, to help us get ready and support us on the trail as well. As we take, our first steps onto the Appalachian Trail Alexandria will begin to realize an amazing goal she has had, to help the children and families receiving care at St. Jude. In regards to this journey Alexandria has said, "Although I do not know them, I love them, I want to do all that I can to help all the sick children." This is why she wants to hike so far on this journey, for all the children and their families, to help them and show them her love.
Alexandria - Such an amazing little girl with a huge heart filled with love. She very much wants to bring positivity and love to all.
Amy – Alexandria's Mother, She has said, “I am going to miss Alexandria like crazy but I believe in her and what she wants to do, so I will be ok. Those families face greater odds right now and they need Alexandria to do this.”
Lastly, me – I am Eddie and I carry stuff. I am also very honored to be Alexandria's Daddy. I am so proud of Alexandria and her amazing heart of gold.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ensures that no family receives a bill. This means that St. Jude covers the cost of treatment, travel, housing and food. This is all done through the generosity of donations and St. Jude needs your help, so they may continue to help so many children and their families.
Alexandria's incredible journey would not be possible without a very special organization and some very incredible people. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the wonderful employees and the incredible volunteers who all offer their time and love to preserving, protecting and caring for the Appalachian Trail. There is such a wonderful community that is built around this amazing and majestic trail. I have seen personally the positive effect that the Appalachian Trail has had on so many people. I, myself have benefited from the trail in so many ways. However, the most important time spent on the trail is with our daughter and watching the growth that comes from the personal challenge and exploration of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail is incredibly family friendly and an amazing place to spend quality time together. Please take a moment if you can and visit the Appalachian Trail Conservancy by clicking below. Thank you and be well!
